I feel stuck in a Malthusian nightmare sometimes. I have to remind myself that in the grander scheme of things there are not that many people in The Gambia, or even Africa. But in my sheme of things, there are loads of people and they are all impoverished. There is a high birth rate, there is a high death rate. There are no old people. In my village of 350 people there are 10 people over 60.
